One month ago, Senator John Kennedy teased the world of Louisiana politics with an announcement that he was thinking about running for governor in 2023. Since then, there has barely been a word about it.
Kennedy would likely be the instant front-runner if he decides to get in the race, and the radio silence from John Kennedy actually works in his favor, says Lapolitics Weekly publisher Jeremy Alford.
"The longer he can drag this out, the better for John Kennedy," said Alford. He explained that Kennedy's keeping us in suspense has also forced potential rivals to pause making any announcements. It also has frozen the flow of campaign cash.
"I think it is keeping donors on the sidelines right now," said Alford, and it all works in the senator's favor.
"I would think this is certainly the desired effect that John Kennedy wants," Alford explained. "I think John Kennedy wants all of us asking ourselves, 'what is John Kennedy going to do next?'"
But not even Kennedy can keep this up indefinitely.
"I think he does have to make a decision here soon," said Alford. "I think that's why he has set a deadline for himself. He has said January, but he hasn't offered a specific date."
