Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry today is set to announce that SpaceX, the rocket-launching company recently taken public by billionaire Elon Musk, is coming to the Pelican state.
The announcement has been kind of an open secret, with SpaceX boss Elon Musk's jet having been spotted lately at south Louisiana airports.
Gulf Coast Bank & Trust CEO Guy Williams says officials have been laying groundwork for this for a while.
"The legislature passed a number of bills in the last session to make it possible and even desirable to have a spaceport in Louisiana," he told WWL's Newell Normand, and said this project could mean thousands of jobs employing highly-skilled and educated workers in the aerospace field.
"This really has the potential to be a big economic driver for south Louisiana, and a big job creator as well," Williams said.
Around 130,000 coastal acres of Vermilion Parish are in line for development.
