A 77-year-old woman is dead and the suspect, a 32-year-old woman with special needs, is in custody says Jefferson Parish Sheriff, Joe Lopinto.
This happened Friday at about 8:21 a.m. inside a home in the 1800 block of Green Oaks Drive in Terrytown.
According to Sheriff Lopinto, the elderly woman was the ‘sitter’ for the special needs woman. Following some type of physical fight, the suspect allegedly attacked the elderly caretaker says Lopinto. The victim was the sitter of the suspect and the two were the only people inside the home at the time of the incident.
“These situations are difficult because we know what happened; it is, not something we are trying to figure out,” says Lopinto in a media briefing at the scene. “We know who did it, I don’t know if we will ever know why it happened, but someone lost a loved one here today and our job is to give as much closure as possible by doing a good investigation.”
The sheriff has not yet identified the victim as the investigation is ongoing.
The initial investigation shows the woman died on the scene of some sort of blunt-force trauma, however, the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office will determine the actual cause of death after an autopsy is completed says Lopinto.
The suspect, who has not been identified, is in custody at the University Medical Center’s psychiatric ward for evaluation says Lopinto.
