When it comes to personal safety, St. Bernard Parish Sheriff James Pohlman used humor and repetition in his recommendations for safety: “There’s three things that you can do to keep yourself safe:  Stay inside… stay inside… and stay inside. And if that’s confusing, just stay inside. OK, because that’s what’s going to keep you safe.”

St. Bernard Parish Hurricane Zeta preparations are in place as they batten down for the arrival of the storm.

During a 10 o’clock press conference Parish President Guy McInnis said, “We’ve always gotten the best results, now we’re going to pray for the best outcome.  We’re gonna get all that Zeta can offer.  We’re going to be on the worst side, the east side of the storm as it is projected.”

“We are expecting tropical storm winds to come into St. Bernard Parish around 3-or-3:30pm,” President McInnis said.  “And that’s winds of up to 39-miles-an-hour up to 73-miles-an-hour.  We expect to have a category-two storm, winds up to 100-miles an hour up to 9pm.”

Parish President McInnis followed up with a recommendation that if you do not feel safe where you are sheltering, to please move to a safe location with a family member or friend.

John Rahaim, Homeland Security and Emergency Prepardness Director, says the

shelter of last resort is the St. Bernard Parish Civic Auditorium Grand Ballroom at 3220 Jean Lafitte Parkway, Chalmette.

This shelter is for residents of St. Bernard Parish only and all people will need identification.

Residents will need to bring their own bedding and food.

All people sheltering will be given a temperature screening for COVID-19 and protocols will be in place.

If there are concerns about COVID-19 exposure, people will be referred to a waiting Acadian Ambulance for immediate review and treatment.
