They have not had a murder in St. Charles Parish since 2024.

The Sheriff's office has released crime statistics for 2025.

"Overall crime has decreased by 2.5%, continuing a steady downward trend," Sgt. Jenni Barrette wrote in a news release.

She touted additional "positive news" in reporting the murder total for the past year.

"Even more encouraging is the fact that no murders were reported in 2025, extending a period without a murder since May 2024. This is the first time in over 30 years that we have not experienced a murder within a calendar year."

Barrette called it a milestone and testament to the hard work of the sheriff's office and the partnerships within the community.

"With year-end figures finalized, 2025 marks the second-lowest year for crime in at least 30 years."

Sheriff Greg Champagne attributed the low crime rate to several factors.

"First, I want to personally thank our dedicated employees who take crime prevention and apprehension seriously. I also want to express my gratitude to the District Attorney and his assistants for their vital role in aggressively prosecuting offenders. Lastly, I want to thank the judges of the 29th Judicial District for their fair and effective administration of justice."
