A train derailment in St. James Parish caused tank cars filled with hydrochloric acid to leak, leading to the evacuation of nearby homes.

About 150 people have evacuated, according to The Advocate.


Acid began pooling and giving off fumes. St. James Parish Sheriff's Deputies had to cover their mouths and noses to keep from breathing it in as they went door to door telling residents they needed to leave.

The derailment happened in the community of Paulina, near where the tracks cross LA 642.

No injuries have been reported. A hazardous materials cleanup crew had been dispatched to the scene.

As of 5:30am this morning (11/3/22) road closures are still as follows:
LA 44 is closed from Antioch Street to Rev. Dr. Samuel Jones
LA 642 from LA 44 to Sugarhouse St is fully Closed.
LA 44 west of LA 3193 is open to residents only.
All streets within the exclusionary zone are closed.
