Fleeing vehicle strikes, kills deputy says St. Tammany Sheriff

A sergeant with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's office is dead after he was struck and killed by a fleeing suspect's vehicle early Sunday morning, the sheriff's office announced.

Sheriff Randy Smith said the sergeant was setting up a spike strip on I-10 near the Oak Harbor exit in assist of a police pursuit when the incident happened.

According to WWL-TV, New Orleans Police then became involved in the chase as the suspect's vehicle crossed into the city.

NOPD says the offender's vehicle crashed into one of their units near I-10 and Crowder Blvd.

The NOPD officer was treated and released from a local hospital.

Police say two juveniles in the car were also taken to the hospital, and the adult driver was arrested.
