The official start of hurricane season is less than twenty-four hours away and all local and state leaders are gearing up for a very active season, according to weather experts.

St. Tammany Parish President, Mike Cooper, spoke with Tommy Tucker this morning about plans for Northshore residents.

He says that preparation is more of a year-round task which is necessary to be accurately prepared.

“We are constantly making sure our drainage features are clear and we meet with all of our stakeholders including Public Works, Faith Based Organizations, and Emergency Services.”

Over on the Northshore, it's the trees that give concern. When a storm rolls in with forceful winds, the greenery escalates the concerns for power outages and impediment to roadways. Parish President Cooper says they have learned from that happening before and have made the necessary preparations.

“We’ve got our public works department, local fire districts, and debris removal contractors ready to move in to get roads clear so emergency personnel can have access. We’ve also made sure our utility companies are ready to restore service as soon as possible.”

With twenty-five named storms predicted for this season, everyone is understandably on edge and Cooper says he is on high alert.

“Out worst nightmare is hearing we will have several named hurricanes.
One is one too many and we certainly want to avoid any major storms this year.”
