St. Tammany State Representative Richard Nelson has announced he is running for Governor.
The 36-year-old was first elected to office in 2019.
Nelson, an attorney and engineer from Mandeville, says “Louisiana has everything going for it, but is held back by leaders who are stuck in the past” in a video announcing his candidacy on Facebook.
Nelson openly says he is a Republican, says he has always been bipartisan stating he is open minded to know running the state of the Louisiana is an effort that takes all kinds.
One of the things Nelson says he will do as Governor is end income taxes in the state.
He previously introduced a bill to repeal income taxes as a way to compete with Texas, Florida and Tennessee. He says getting rid of income taxes will keep tax dollars in local communities across the state versus concentrating power and money in Baton Rouge.
Already the Republican pool of candidates is crowded with the likes of Attorney General Jeff Landry, State Senator Sharon Hewitt, and State Treasurer John Schroder.
Non-partisan independent Hunter Lundy rounds out the count.
