There is a change in senior leadership at the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office: Chief Deputy Jeff Boehm announced Tuesday that he is resigning.

The sheriff's office says the decision came after "careful consideration" and was made "in the best interest of the agency and the deputies who serve the citizens of St. Tammany Parish."

"It has been an honor to serve alongside the dedicated men and women of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office," Boehm said in a statement. "This decision was not made lightly, but I believe it is the right one for the agency at this time. My priority has always been the success of this organization and the deputies who serve our community every day. I am confident they will continue to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and service, and I wish the agency nothing but success moving forward."

The chief deputy's departure comes weeks after Sheriff Randy Smith's arrest on a felony battery charge, following an incident last month at a restaurant in Madisonville.

The sheriff was booked after he was accused of attacking a man from behind at Keith's Young Steakhouse. The victim, local blogger Bobby Couvillon, was treated after the incident for a concussion and other injuries.
