State constitution vote could come today

Capitol

A vote is expected today in the Louisiana House on holding a constitutional convention.

The plan is to begin the convention in just 20 days, and be finished as soon as June 3.

LaPolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford says while many lawmakers agree there needs to be an overhaul of the state constitution, they believe this process has been rushed.

"You know, we've been trying to do this for a generation, and now, all of a sudden, we want to get it done in a few weeks," Alford said.

It would take a two-thirds vote, and Alford says it appears there is enough support in the house. The state senate, he says, will be another matter.

"Looks like the governor's probably going to get in a vote on the house floor. We'll have to see how that goes, but big concerns over in the Senate. All eyes are on the Senate when it comes to this convention."

Alford says Gov. Jeff Landry has said the constitutional convention is a chance to reorganize the state constitution, so lawmakers won't have to always slash higher education and health care when the budget gets lean.
