State Lawmakers plan to hold a three-week special session in February on Redistricting. Speaking to the Baton Rouge Press Club, Crowley Representative John Stefanski says lawmakers are close to completing a statewide “roadshow”, to hear what the public thinks about drawing new districts.
“And after that, we’ll have a conclusion meeting at the capitol in order to discuss what we’ve found and potentially do some proposals of maps at that time as well,” said Stefanski.
There’s been a push by some groups to create a second minority-majority district, but Stefanski doesn’t expect major changes to the six U.S. House districts.
“So I see a lot of interest in keeping the parameters like they are and just tweaking the numbers around the edges to make them work,” said Stefanski.
Stefanski is concerned that if the state’s population doesn’t grow enough, Louisiana could lose a Congressional district after the 2030 census.
“If we keep this trend ten years from now, I do not think we’ll keep six Congressmen, I think we’ll be talking about losing one,” said Stefanski.
Stefanski says the state’s population only grew three percent over the last decade.
