After a series of high-profile airline debacles, President Biden dedicated quite a bit of time in his State of the Union address to the Junk Fees Prevention Act, a push to limit hidden fees and surcharges.
The proposed legislation would curtail companies from overcharging on things like extra resort fees at hotels, service fees at concerts and sporting events, and added costs charged by airlines so family members can sit together.
Union locals that represent dockworkers at 36 ports from Maine to the Gulf Coast have opened contract talks with employers well ahead of the current multiyear agreement’s expiration next year.
Officials say the early start is a signal that both sides are eager to get a new contract amid a period of strained labor-management relations.
Negotiations on the West Coast have been stalled since last summer, and dockworkers have been working without a contract since then.
Futures are down after stocks closed higher yesterday. The Dow Industrials gained 265, the NASDAQ rose 226 and the S&P 500 added 52.
