A deployment of State Police Troopers is being sent to New Orleans to assist NOPD starting in June ahead of the expected summer surge in crime.

Operation Gold Eagle 2 is essentially a rerun of last year’s LSP summertime deployment that local law enforcement leaders touted as a major success.

“At the end of May of 2021 there was a large spike in violent crime, we were averaging approximately 82 violent crimes reported per week from January to May of 2021,” said NOPD Chief Shaun Ferguson. “By the end of the summer, by the end of Operation Gold Eagle, we were averaging approximately 53 crimes reported per week.”

The deployment will come alongside a change in work schedule for many NOPD officers. A pilot program is being implemented starting in June that will allow district platoon officers to shift to a 12-hour work shift.

The youth curfew is also making a comeback. Curfew will be at 9 PM on Friday and Saturday night and at 8 PM the rest of the week.

“As we have done before the first time or two we are going to take that child home, but that third time we will be looking for the parents and holding them accountable and when I say holding them accountable they are subject to being cited as well, as to why we are consistently locating these kids after hours.”
