State shelters will follow CDC guidelines, local shelters may differ says GOHSEP director

Shelters will be available ahead of Tropical Storm Ida making landfall.

Communications director for the Governor's Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, Mike Steele, says congregate shelters will be utilized and CDC COVID guidelines will be used.

“I don’t think we are going to see any segregation as far as vaccinated or not vaccinated, but there will be CDC guidance on spacing issues, there may be some temperature checks, and PPU requirements that sort of thing,” said Steele.

While state shelters will not require proof of vaccination, masks and social distancing will be enforced at state shelters, local municipality shelters may have their own COVID guidelines regarding vaccinated and unvaccinated residents in shelters.

Steele, also says they are working with parish leaders on preparing for Tropical Storm Ida.

“We have conference calls with them throughout the process so that we all can be updated if they are looking to make those types of moves, then we can talk about the kinds of things we need to do to support them,” said Steele.

Governor Edwards signed a State Emergency Declaration last night and Steele says the governor is working with President Biden to declare a presidential state of emergency ahead of Ida landfall.

Tropical Storm Ida is expected to make landfall near the Louisiana coast sometime late Friday night, early Saturday morning.
