"Great crawfish season ahead," says Louisiana Ag Commissioner

If you're craving crawfish, you're in luck.

Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner says this year's crop is already coming in, and he says that's a sign of what's ahead.

"They're coming," Strain said. "We're going to have a great crawfish season. "We've had very mild weather. These little bit of cold fronts are okay. They're going to cool them down."

Strain told WWL's Tommy Tucker that the early apperance of crawfish is partly thanks to Mother Nature and partly the result of crawfish farmers planting another crop in their ponds.

"We've had a very good season," Strain said. "We've had enough rain. We've had enough rice planted. We just can't wait."

That means if you want to eat crawfish now, you'll won't have any problems finding the crustaceans.

"Everybody's getting ready," Strain said. "I know that at a few places here and there you can find some crawfish. (As) we get in towards the end of this month and the beginning of February, they should become much more plentiful."

That, Strain says, means we're in store for a long crawfish season.

"I think we're going to have an excellent season. We're going to have a great Lent," Strain said. "When we start looking at Easter, that's going to be a little early. So we're going to have to eat them fast. But they're coming."
