Crews are closing lanes in Downtown New Orleans as part of the response to the dilapidated Plaza Tower.

"The Department of Public Works will be proactively closing Howard Avenue (from Rampart to Loyola) and the right lane of Loyola Avenue (from Howard to Julia) until further notice," the city announced.

Authorities describe this closure as a "safety precautions related to the deteriorating condition of an adjacent building."

The closure will remain until further notice.

The city is calling on the building owner to make "necessary repairs" before the streets can reopen.

In the meantime, traffic on Howard Avenue will be diverted to O'Keefe Avenue.

"Safety remains the City’s top priority. Signage and traffic control measures, including barrels and barricades, will be installed to guide drivers and pedestrians safely through the area."
