Sunday's rained-out New Orleans parades roll Uptown tonight

Parades

Thanks to Sunday's miserable weather, Femme Fatale, Carrollton and King Arthur will bring us a rare "Tuesday-before-Fat Tuesday" schedule.

There used to be parades on this part of the Mardi Gras Calendar, but it eventually got to be too much on city workers.

"What happened, as the parade schedule grew, there were so many parades the police needed some relief, and so they kind of created a couple of non-parade nights," said Mardi Gras historian Errol Laborde.

Laborde says that also affords a chance for earlier parades to get a do-over if the weather is bad.

"If you're in that first week of carnival, they usually find a spot somewhere else," he explained.

The city still wants to keep things moving so its workers don't get overtaxed, which is part of the reason why there will be no bands or walking units tonight.

"It kind of lessens for the burden for police to move and so I think that's a good solution," said Laborde.
