The results of a New Orleans Crime Coalition survey show slightly more than half of residents in New Orleans feel the New Orleans Police Department is doing a satisfactory job of keeping the city safe.
The independent survey measured public perception of police performance in the City of New Orleans. Eight hundred New Orleans residents were surveyed from September 8 to 17, 2020.
The survey results found 57% of New Orleans residents say they are satisfied with the NOPD. However, the results find a notable divide by age. Only 41% of residents 18-44 years old are satisfied with the NOPD, while 71% of those surveyed 45 years and older are not happy with the job the NOPD is doing.
When it comes to residents’ perception of the safety in their own neighborhood, 66% say they feel safe in their neighborhood and 81% say the feel their own neighborhood is safe.
The survey results find there is room for improvement. Among those surveyed, many still feel the NOPD is doing a poor job and need to improve their relations with community groups, ethics and professionalism, and appropriate use of force. The results found 18 to 23 percent still rate the NOPD as “poor” in those areas needing improvement while 29 to 38 percent would rate the department as ‘excellent’ or ‘good’.
