New Orleans Police say they have a man in custody after a deadly shooting this afternoon in the heart of the French Quarter.
According to police, a man was shot near the intersection of Bourbon and Toulouse streets. Capt. Hans Ganthier says the victim staggered into a nearby daiquiri shop.
"Officer responded to him immediately, got EMS over here. They also put out a description of the perpetrator," said Ganthier. "He was apprehended at the North Rampart corridor."
The victim was taken to the hospital where he died a short time later.
Ganthier says the incident is regrettable, but the NOPD's current deployment is part of the reason why the suspect was taken into custody so quickly.
"The perpetrator was captured very quickly and efficiently by officers with no one else getting hurt," he said. "Our deployment really worked. This was an unfortunate incident. I wish it didn't happen but it did."
