A 16-year-old convicted carjacker has been sentenced to 55 years in prison.

A Jefferson Parish jury convicted Maurice Ervin on two counts of armed robbery last week. According to District Attorney Paul Connick, Jr., the jury deliberated for only one hour before returning that verdict. Judge Frank Brindisi handed down Ervin’s sentence on Monday.

Connick’s office prosecuted Ervin as an adult.

Ervin used a pistol to carjack a man and a woman who had stopped in the 1900 block of Hickory Avenue in Harahan to take photos of Hurricane Ida roof damage. In the process, Ervin dragged the man with car and ran over his left foot after the man fell to the ground during stuggle.

Ervin later led sheriff’s deputies on a chase after a bystander called 911 to report the carjacking. The chase ended when Ervin crashed into a utility pole.
