Teen dragged, run over, killed in St. Bernard Parish
St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office

The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office says a 16-year-old boy was killed after being dragged and run over by a vehicle in Violet.

It happened Monday evening around 9 p.m.

"Deputies responded to a call for service in reference to a person lying in the roadway in the 2200 block of Meraux Lane in Violet," the sheriff's office said. "When deputies arrived on scene, they came into contact with a male who was on the ground and in distress."

The victim was taken to a hospital where he later died.

Investigators say that surveillance video of the scene shows the 16-year-old walking along Meraux Lane when he was approached by a white Chevrolet van. There was an apparent altercation between the van's driver and the 16-year-old, and the driver of the van sped away, while the 16-year-old was still making contact with the driver's side window.

"As the vehicle departed, the victim was dragged, fell to the roadway and was subsequently run over," the sheriff's office said.

Detectives identified the driver as a 15-year-old male and arrested him Tuesday. Deputies booked the suspect into the St. Bernard Parish Juvenile Detention Center on charges of negligent homicide and hit-and-run resulting in death.

The case is still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501; the Criminal Investigations Bureau’s tip hotline at (504) 271-TIPS (8477); or Crimestoppers GNO at (504) 822-1111.

Callers to Crimestoppers do not have to leave their names and may be eligible for a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest and indictment.
