A local teen fell to his death inside the Market Street Power Plant in the Lower Garden District on Friday. The abandoned site has been a destination for urban explorers illegally entering the property but it isn't yet known why the teen was inside the building.
As Nola.com reports, the coroner identified the teen as 18-year-old Anthony Clawson, a recent Magna Cum Laude graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School. Police say the teen fell 50 feet to the ground.
The Market Street Power Plant located along the river near the Crescent City Connection was built by the New Orleans Public Service Inc. in 1905 and produced power up to 1973.
Entergy sold the plant to Market Street Properties LLC in 2007 for $10 million. Then it was sold again in 2015 to New Orleans developer Joe Jaeger.
The site was planned to be redeveloped into a mixed-use, residential and commercial space but the project never moved forward.
