Two teens are in jail after Kenner police say they led authorities on a chase in a stolen car before crashing that car into a canal.
According to Kenner Police Captain Michael Cunningham, a surveillance camera spotted the stolen vehicle entering the city around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday. A few minutes later, officers found the car near the corner of Airline Highway and Williams Boulevard. Cunningham says the driver of the stolen car, a 15-year-old from Kenner, saw officers coming and sped away on Airline Highway.
Cunningham says the chase continued into Metairie. That chase ended, Cunningham says, after the teen driver struck a parked car and crashed the stolen vehicle into the drainage canal near West Napoleon Avenue near North Hullen Street. Police arrested a 14-year-old passenger immediately after the crash. The driver ranaway from the scene, but he was arrested minutes later after a canine officer found him hiding in a backyard.
The 15-year-old driver is facing illegal possession of stolen things, aggravated flight, possession of tools for a crime, possession of marijuana, and resisting charges. The 14-year-old, who police say is from Metairie, is facing illegal possession of stolen things charges.
