Temporary power generation plant comes online on Grand Isle

Power is starting to slowly be reestablished in Grand Isle 37 days after the barrier island took a direct hit from one of the most powerful storms in US history.

It’s still tough going for the few locals who remain, but Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng told WWL’s Newell Normand that there’s a bright spot in recovery efforts.

“Entergy set up a temporary generation plant, and there was power to some of the residents already, so that was a big achievement last night,” said Sheng who added she got pictures of the now partially lit up Grand Isle last night.

The plant is lighting up a loop of residences and facilities on the east side of the island.

Sheng cautioned there’s still a long way to go for residents at the southernmost tip of the parish. Water and sewage is still down, making life there very difficult.

“Grand Isle is still under a do not drink order and we’re still barging in water. Grand Isle gets its water from Laffite that is over 30 miles long and we are still doing those repairs,” said Sheng.
