Many car manufacturers are going all-electric by 2035. That means New Orleans will have to have a robust electric charging infrastructure if it wants to stay competitive for tourists, many of whom will be expecting to be able to drive their electric cars into town in the near future.

The tourism industry is well aware according to New Orleans and Company’s Kelly Shulz who told WWL they’re working with state and federal officials to utilize funds from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to make it happen in the near future. Schulz said that bill isn’t just a boon to tourists, it’ll be a relief to locals.

“Part of that bill was to allow funds to those who are in need of electric vehicle chargers, and we are actually working with the department of transportation right now on getting some of those chargers placed throughout the state,” said Shulz who added in the short term we’ve seen strategic installations like those at coveted parking spots at Louis Armstrong International.

A recent presentation to the Public Service Commission noted Louisiana is far behind many other states in overall electric charging station installation. The state may not have long to catch up to other destination locations.

“New Orleans is known as a world-class destination, and we are known for our hospitality, but we also want to be known for being prepared for the future,” said Shulz.
