Looking for something to do this weekend?

How about going fishing!

This is the weekend to do it – it’s free fishing weekend June 7-8.

“Nobody needs a fishing license,” says Rene LeBreton with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. “Go out, fish, have fun, bring some family members, bring some friends and introduce them to the sport of fishing.”

Every state has a free fishing weekend, although not necessarily the same weekend.

The program has been going on for decades, and LeBreton says it’s been very successful.

“Research does show that if you can introduce somebody to fish and they have some success with it, they are going to buy a fishing license after that,” says LeBreton.

Fishing licenses are very easy to obtain – and very inexpensive.

“A basic fishing license for a resident is $17,” LeBreton says; “and if you want to add on a saltwater fishing privilege to that, it’s another $15 on top of that.”

The fishing license is good for 365 days following the date of issuance.
