During an appearance on the Newell Normand Show, Rafael Goyeneche of the Metropolitan Crime Commission laid out some disturbing numbers found when breaking down the amount of gun violence in the Crescent City this past year.
“We break it down by neighborhoods,” Goyeneche said of the more in-depth analysis. “And when you start to look at the numbers of homicides and shootings by districts, you see some concentrations.”
Goyeneche said there were 218 homicides in 2023.
“But when you start to break down those 218 homicides by police districts,” he said, “you’ll see that the 7th District had 69 homicides, which represents 32% of all homicides.
“The 5th District had 46. That represents 21% of the homicides. And the 1st District had 31, which represents 14%. So in those three districts – three out of eight districts – the homicide total was 146 homicides out of the grand total for the entire city of 218.
“That represents 67% of all of the homicides that occurred in the city last year,” he concluded.
Goyeneche also surmised that because of the placement of the killings by district and the fact that they were not committed in connection with other crimes like armed robbery, that the murders were very intentional.
