A hard freeze is just around the corner and your outdoor plants are at risk. Dan Gill, host of the Garden Show on WWL, says you need to be evaluating which plants need to be brought inside and those that can make it through the arctic chill by just covering them up.

He says, "First off identify which plants are going to need to be protected...tender plants that don't have much cold hardiness, so are likely to be damaged or even killed by temperatures down in the 20s.

Plants you wish to leave outside can be protected by covering them with sheets, plastic sheeting or other such items and make sure those coverings go all the way to the ground or you lose that source of heat.

Gill says that should keep the cold from killing them, although they still may be damaged depending on the length of the freezing weather.

But he says, "You need to decide how you are going to help them, how are you going to protect them."

He says if you have tender vegetation outside on your decks, patios or porches the best move is to get them inside.

Gill says, "You can move them into a garage, or even move them inside where the temperatures will stay more moderate."

He says that you can go online to check the cold hardiness of a plant to determine what needs to be done to protect them from freezing temperatures.
