Nobody had anything good to say about the current Planning Commission proposed changes to allow two short-term rental unit per block.
Short-term rental advocates call it too restrictive.
While housing advocates fear it will push rentals into neighborhoods surrounding the French Quarter. They want short-term rentals banned outright.
The initial requirement that residents actually live on the property they want to rent out was deemed unconstitutional, leaving New Orleans under a court ordered deadline of March 31st to replace the residency requirement.
This leaves the Commission between a rock and hard place trying to find the sweet spot for a total number of permits.
A vote initially scheduled for Tuesday was delayed due to inclement weather.
According to the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate says many of the homeowners who spoke at the Planning Commission meeting said they relied on the additional income short-term rentals provide to offset rising taxes, property insurance, and other costs.
Housing advocates countered that relying on new industry for income is still risky and still in a fluid state when it comes to regulations.
