The highly popular California grocery chain Trader Joe’s is bringing their whimsical brands of items and goods to New Orleans.
The project to construct the new grocery store will go in along a blighted stretch between the VA hospital campus and the Orleans Parish Courthouse.
The store is expected to take up the block on Tulane between Banks and South Rocheblave backed by South Dorgenois.
The expected size will be roughly 13,000 square feet and featuring more than 100 parking spaces for customers.
The project is being headed up by the Feil Organization, owners of a number of properties across the region, including a new retail center planned for Metairie near the lakefront.
The store’s footprint is described as nearly identical to the one on Veterans Boulevard in Metairie.
According to the Times-Picayune/New Orleans Advocate the addition of the new grocery store marks a significant redevelopment of area.
Once the front door to New Orleans, Tulane Avenue has slipped from its prominent position to becoming a strip of rundown motels for prostitutes and drugs.
The restoration of Tulane began with the development of VA medical complex.
The addition of Trader Joes to Tulane Avenue would be the first in Orleans Parish.
There’s also new apartment blocks along the stretch built in recent years.
