Troopers: Two dead in separate crashes

LSP
Louisiana State Police

Two people are dead after two separate crashes in Metro New Orleans.

The first happened around 8 p.m. Friday on Interstate 12 near LA 434 in St. Tammany Parish.

State troopers say an SUV driven by Melissa Cannata rear-ended a car. An 18-wheeler traveling behind those vehicles then rear-ended Cannata’s SUV, sending Cannata’s vehicle off the road and into a tree.

Troopers say Cannatta was not properly restrained and died at the hospital. The drivers of the car and of the 18-wheeler were not injured.

The second crash happened around 10:45 p.m. on LA 18 at Rusty Road near Waggaman.

According to state troopers, Charles Hebert was riding his motorcycle when he tried to pass a pickup truck attempting to make a left turn. Hebert hit the left side of the truck and was thrown from the motorcycle. EMS crews took Hebert to the hospital where he later died. Troopers say Hebert was wearing a helmet.  The driver of the truck was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained minor injuries.

Both crashes remain under investigation.
