Tropical Depression Nine has formed in the Bay of Campeche, the National Hurricane Center announced Tuesday afternoon.
The depression is moving east at five miles per hour with maximum winds of 35 miles per hour.
"By Friday, a turn to the northeast is anticipated," said Senior Hurricane Specialist John Cangialosi. "On the forecast track, the depression is expected to pass to the north of the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday, and approach the U.S. northern Gulf Coast on Friday."
The depression could become Tropical Storm Isaias later this week.
"The environmental conditions appear generally conducive for strengthening over the next few days," Cangialosi said. "The NHC intensity forecast shows the system becoming a tropical storm by early Wednesday and a hurricane on Thursday."
