Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser recently returned from a trip to Canada. His mission was to foster a more open tourism relationship between the state of Louisiana and our Canadian cousins. However, a tense relationship between Canada and the United States has developed due to President Trump’s tariffs according to Nungesser.
“It’s going to impact us for a while. Canadians book trips generally one or two years out. So, we’re down about 20% at this point,” Nungesser says.
“After visiting with all the officials up there and travel agents, they’re not booking trips to the United States for the foreseeable future. Many of them have said ‘Not until this guy is out of office or apologizes over the statements about being America’s 51st state, among other things,' so I don’t expect that to change soon,” he went on to add.
“I had Trudeau on the left side of me and his opponent on the right. The conservatives were projected to win by a large majority, but those comments flipped that entire election,” Nungesser pointed out. “The liberals won the majority of the seats and the leader of their country is as well, because of those comments and because of the tariffs,” he went on to say.
