Two alarm fire in New Orleans East, 19 homeless

A two alarm fire at a duplex in New Orleans East has left 19 people homeless.

New Orleans Fire Department was on scene just after 5pm.

They found the double at 8540-8542 Bill Street engulfed in fire with heavy smoke coming from the building.

A Second Alarm was immediately struck at 5:20 pm.

All residents escaped the fire before firefighters arrived on the scene.

The fire started at 8542 in a rear bedroom from an overloaded electrical outlet and quickly spread to several rooms in the home.

Four adults and five children lived at 8542 and their home was totally destroyed.  Two adults and one child lived at 8540, firefighters rescued a puppy, a snake and two bearded dragons uninjured, there was smoke and water damage to this home.

One adult lived alone at 8550 and the rear of the exterior of the home sustained fire, smoke and water damage.

Three adults and three children lived at 8552, the home sustained minor smoke and water damage.

No injuries were reported.
