The Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto announced his deputies arrested Dustin Hendricks, 34, of Dayton, Texas for one count of aggravated assault on a peace officer in Avondale.
The incident happened after a deputy attempted to do a traffic stop on Hendricks Wednesday night according to a JPSO spokesperson.
A JPSO report says:
At approximately 8:00 p.m. last night, a uniformed JPSO deputy initiated a traffic stop on a reckless driver on South Jamie Boulevard. The driver, later identified as Hendricks, refused to stop his vehicle. He continued to the end of South Jamie Boulevard, crashed through a fence, and exited the vehicle. As Hendricks exited his vehicle, he grabbed a firearm that was in his waistband. Believing his life was in imminent danger from Hendricks' actions, the pursuing deputy fired a duty weapon at Hendricks one time. Hendricks was not hit and fled into the wooded area at the location. Additional assets including our K-9 Division, Air Unit, and extra personnel were deployed to the area to assist in the search.
Hendricks was taken in to custody Thursday morning
Sheriff Lopinto says Hendricks was found by deputies about a half-mile away from the initial pursuit off of US Highway 90.
They say Hendricks attempted again to avoided arrest by swimming away from deputies in a canal.
However, after a couple of hours of swimming in the canal, Hendricks swam into shallow water where deputies were able to make an arrest with the assistance of K-9 officer.
Hendricks is currently being treated for minor injuries from a K-9 bite and will be booked at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.
