Louisiana's incoming Attorney General, Liz Murrill, today elaborated on plans to team up with New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams in an unprecedented move to let state prosecutors handle cases in the city.
The right wing Republican told WWL's Newell Normand that teaming up with the left wing D.A. in the city will lighten to load for overburdened Williams and allow her office and Governor-Elect Jeff Landry to make good on a campaign commitment.
"We're both making good on a promise to make addressing crime in New Orleans a priority," Murrill explained. "We need everyone in our state and the people of New Orleans and the Nation to see that we can get this under control. That's our first priority."
The A.G.-Elect says Landry is going to send more troopers to New Orleans.
"The governor plans to bring them back and strategically place the state police where they need to be."
Murrill's office will prosecute arrests the troopers make.
She knows there are problems with the courts and other parts of the criminal justice system in New Orleans too.
"It is not acceptable to me to just blame the system!" she insisted.
The incoming attorney general said whether it's judges setting low bails, issues getting a case scheduled or anything else... it must be addressed.
"We need to fix it," she told Normand.
Landry and Murrill take office January 8th.
