The city of New Orleans comes closer to paying its contract workers a $15 minimum wage.
On Wednesday, the Civil Service Commission voted to approve a payment plan to raise wages for city workers to $15 per hour. The payment plan follows an ordinance to increase the wage introduced by Councilmember Jared Brossett.
Brossett says the move levels the playing field for city employees.
“I'm glad we're continuing to take steps toward a $15 per hour minimum wage," said Brossett. "For too long, our City employees have been working for a city they can hardly afford to live in. With the rising cost of living, this increase in wages is critical. It also sends a message to our City employees that we value and respect the work they do.”
Brossett says the steps move the city in the right direction and will benefit city workers like firefighters, groundskeepers, office assistants, equipment operators, and many more city employees who will see a wage increase. Brossett nor the Civil Service Commission announced a timetable for when employees will actually see the wage increase on their paychecks.
