Earthquake
United States Geological Survey

An earthquake struck just off the Louisiana coast last Sunday night.

According to the United States Geological Survey, that tremor took place at approximately 11:15 p.m. Central Daylight Time about 96 miles east southeast of Venice. The USGS’s report says the 3.3-magnitude earthquake happened at a depth of about 3.1 miles.

According to the USGS website, one person in Destrehan—some 172 miles from the epicenter--reported feeling the earthquake. The person who reported feeling the tremor said (s)he felt only weak shaking. The USGS says it has not verified the user-provided information.

According to USGS data, only four other earthquakes have been recorded off the Louisiana coast since 1900. Those four, like Sunday’s, were shallow and of low magnitude.

The last earthquake to strike Louisiana happened on April 1, 2021, when a 3.3-magnitude earthquake hit an area northwest of Shreveport near the Louisiana/Texas state line.
