The record-setting string of daily high temperatures and dangerous heat advisories is sending more people seeking the comfort of air conditioning. That means more demand on the power grid.
So far, the increasing demand on the power grid has not been more than utilities can handle.
"They have been daunting," said CLECO Communications Specialist Fran Phoenix. "We haven't seen record temperature like this, I would say, in a while."
Phoenix says despite that, they are holding up.
"There are currently no reported constraints on CLECO's power grid, but conditions can change at any time which is why we monitor our grid 24/7," Phoenix said.
Entergy said it is also closely monitoring the condition of its power grid. The company released the following statement:
“We plan extensively to continue serving our customers during extreme weather that drives an increase in energy usage, like the extreme heat our area has been experiencing. And we are closely monitoring the reliability of our electric system around the clock. Entergy’s reliability coordinator, MISO, has indicated sufficient generation capacity exists to meet electricity demand for their planning year that began June 1 and includes the summertime months. In the unlikely event that a shortfall of power generation capacity in the region arises, we will work with MISO to minimize the impact on our customers and keep them informed throughout the process.”
