UPDATE, 5:57 p.m. The Bonnet Carré Spillway is now open to traffic. However, traffic is moving slowly, with congestion stretching to the I-10/I-55 interchange. Drivers are still encouraged to take a detour route.
ORIGINAL STORY: If you're taking Interstate 10 to get to New Orleans, you'll want to take a detour before you get to the Bonnet Carré Spillway.
Two lanes of the Spillway Bridge are closed at milepost 217 because a vehicle fire. According to state police, both lanes of traffic are blocked while firefighters work to put out the flames. No word if anyone was injured or what sparked that fire.
Initially, all three eastbound lanes were shut down because of the fire. Authorities opened one of those lanes just before 3 p.m.
Drivers are urged to exit off of I-10 at either of the LaPlace exits, drive south to US 61/Airline Highway, and follow that highway into New Orleans.
