After serving 47 years with the New Orleans Police Department, Captain James Scott is retiring from service.
During his career, he served the NOPD’s First, Third, and Fourth Districts, Special Operations Division, and finally as Captain of the Specialized Investigations Division, and Investigation and Support Bureau.
“I would like to thank Captain Scott for his 47 years of dedicated service to NOPD. He has played a major role in this department,” Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said. “While he is retiring, we will still benefit from his knowledge and expertise through his participation as a reserve officer.”
"For nearly five decades, Capt. James Scott has served to protect his community in a wide range of positions. His legacy will be felt in different districts and different divisions. We thank Captain Scott for his service and wish him the best on his retirement," said New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell.
Scott’s retirement opened opportunities for change in the NOPD’s ranks of command. Chief Ferguson promotes Lt. Bruce Haney to captain and will assume head duties at the Crime Laboratory and Central Evidence and Processing.

Chief Ferguson says NOPD captain Frank Young will move from the Fifth District to head the Criminal Investigative Division and Captain Regina Williams will move from the Criminal Investigations Division to run the Fifth District.
"We must change and mature with the times to better serve our community." Ferguson goes on to say, "I will continue to make changes when necessary to bring about the most efficient outcomes," said Ferguson.
