Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry is now facing a potential recall.

The Secretary of State's Office confirms to WWL that two Baton Rouge residents filed that petition on Monday. The recall organizers now have 180 days to obtain the nearly 600,000 signatures required by law to put the recall on a ballot next year.

According to one analyst, that's a nearly impossible task to accomplish.

"You're looking at getting 20 percent of the qualified electorate to sign this petition," LA Politics publisher Jeremy Alford said. "Most elections, you can't get that many people to show up to the voting booth."

That's why Alford says the state's multi-tiered process for recalling an elected official is rarely ever successful. Alford notes that every governor in modern Louisiana history has faced a recall petition, but those petitions died because organizers could not get the required number of signatures.

"Just the recall process doesn't guarantee that an official would be removed," Alford said.

The recall comes after Landry championed the Supreme Court's decision to void Louisiana's congressional map and supported a bill to eliminate the Orleans Parish Criminal Clerk of Court's office. If the petition were to succeed and the recall were to be put on a ballot, Alford says Landry has enough support that he would survive the effort to remove him from office.

"I don't think what's happening now with redistricting and with Governor Landry's primary priorities are going to shake any supporters off of him," Alford said.

In fact, Alford believes Landry remains the frontrunner in the 2027 governor's race.

"He looks extremely strong for reelection," Alford said. "I haven't even heard any rumors of people who are looking to run against Governor Landry next year."
