With qualifying now underway for the New Orleans mayoral race, all eyes are not just on who’s running but how much money they’ve raised.
So far, Councilwoman Helena Moreno leads the fundraising field, but political analyst Ron Faucheux says that alone doesn’t guarantee an advantage.
“Money’s important, but it’s not everything,” Faucheux said. “Some candidates spend it wisely, others don’t. And some may not need to spend very much at all to remain viable.”
Campaign finance reports offer only a partial view of a candidate’s financial backing. Faucheux points out that super PACs can inject major dollars into the race, supporting their chosen candidates through advertising and outreach, without being reflected in individual campaign ledgers.
And while grassroots campaigns are often viewed as low-cost alternatives, Faucheux cautions against thinking they’re free.
“There’s no such thing as a free grassroots campaign,” he said. “You still need paid staff, materials, and logistics to get boots on the ground.”
As the October election draws closer, campaign finance will remain a factor but Faucheux says the key question isn’t just who has the most money, but how effectively they use it.
