Where will New Orleans get money to repair crumbling water mains?

The plan to stop the water main breaks in New Orleans gets some discussion today with members of the New Orleans City Council.

With water main breaks happening seemingly on a weekly basis, the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans says it has identified 33 miles of underground water mains that are more than a hundred years old.

Interim General Superintendent Kaitlin Tymrak says there are a couple of pipe lengths in particular that are giving them the most trouble.

"Two of those major mains are the ones that have experienced the major breaks recently, and those are our first priority in terms of addressing some known issues," Tymrak said. "Going from there, and doing additional condition assessments to understand the condition of those remaining 33 miles."

The repairs could cost around $27.5 million. Replacing that much pipe could cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

The larger plan will cost about $800 million.
