Appearing Tuesday morning on a Baton Rouge radio program, Trina Edwards, the widow of former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards, revealed there’s a new love in her life – and admits he’s got a lot in common with her deceased husband.
Edwards told WRKF’s Jim Engster her new beau is another well-known state politician: former Senate President John Alario.
“Obviously I have a type,” she said.

She also revealed that Alario’s name came up as a possible love interest during a conversation with her husband before he passed.
“He would say, ‘I think you should marry so-and-so after I die.’ And I’d say, ‘No, he’s not my type.’ And one time I said, ‘I don’t know. What about John Alario?’ And he said, ‘Oh, no. Not him.’ And I said, ‘Why’s that?’ He said, ‘He doesn’t have any money.’ I said, ‘Well you don’t have any money. He said, ‘Oh yeah. I guess you’re right. Do what you want.’”
Alario has also dealt with the grief of losing a spouse and, at 78, is quite a bit older than his 43-year-old romantic interest, and the relationship first gained traction when she would lean on him for dating advice as offers for courtship began to appear.
Eventually, it ripened into a relationship, and Edwards believes her departed husband would approve.
“Edwin is a hard act to follow. But John keeps up pretty well,” she said. “I have the same problem that I had with Edwin. It’s hard for me to keep up with him.”
