More rules and restrictions for Mardi Gras in New Orleans are up for discussion Tuesday with members of the New Orleans City Council.
The council's Mardi Gras Legislative Advisory Committee is considering prohibiting parade goers from bringing upholstered furniture, generators, enclosures, and portable toilets to the parades. It also includes a ban on open flames.
Mardi Gras Guide publisher Arthur Hardy says the parade-going public must buy-in in order for this to work.
"That's a great practice in terms of safety, but will people obey, and if they don't, what happens, and do you have the manpower to make people comply? If you don't, the law is meaningless," Hardy said. "I think you need to have reasonable restrictions and then a reason to believe they can be enforced."
The committee is also discussing prohibiting parades from firing off confetti cannons. In recent carnivals, Mylar confetti at parades has come in contact with power company equipment, causing extensive blackouts for thousands.
The committee meets at 10 a.m. at New Orleans City Hall.
