Saturday is election day in Louisiana for U.S. Senate party primaries, and some other primaries, too. The most-watched race will be for Senate on the Republican side.
Incumbent Bill Cassidy is being challenged from within the Republican party over his vote five years ago to convict Donald Trump on impeachment charges related to the January 6 insurrection attempt.
The Cassidy campaign has made a push for independent support, but political analyst Pearson Cross says non-Republicans are mad at Cassidy for different reasons.
"For example, his kowtowing to Trump, aside from the impeachment vote, and then the vote to confirm RFK (Jr.) as health secretary," said Cross.
Cross says Cassidy's make-or-break vote to confirm RFK Jr. as health secretary hurt him there.
"So when he went ahead and did approve that, it's not clear that that saved him with either Trump supporters or Democrats," he said.
Cross says Cassidy is in for the challenge of his political life and might not even make a Republican runoff.
President Trump had endorsed Congresswoman Julia Letlow for the position, while Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming hopes to play spoiler and make the runoff.
The ballot also includes Louisiana Supreme Court, BESE, state constitutional amendments, and local races.
