It was a wild scene Tuesday night after a medical call turned into a police emergency in New Orleans.

"EMS responded to a medical call at Ozanam Inn on Poydras Street. While paramedics were treating a patient in the back of the ambulance, a woman entered the vehicle’s front cab and drove away," NOPD Public Information Officer James Roberson explained.

He says the EMS staff promptly alerted NOPD.  Other ambulances responded too.

"The vehicle eventually came to a stop at Broad and Agriculture Streets, where additional EMS units intercepted it."

Roberson says EMS personnel safely removed the woman, and NOPD officers arrested her.

"The individual was transported to University Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation, and warrants are being pursued for simple kidnapping and various traffic offenses."

NOPD identifies the suspect as 45-year-old Valerie Barron.
