According to a report, police in Paris, France, have arrested an 18-year-old American student who is suspected of throwing her newborn baby out of a third-floor window of a hotel.
CBS News reported that prosecution sources from France confirmed the arrest, saying that police were called to the scene in the 20th district in eastern Paris early Monday morning.
The Independent reported that the newborn was located by first responders and quickly taken to the Robert Debre Hospital with serious injuries, but it did not survive.
“The newborn was treated urgently but did not survive. The juvenile protection brigade was tasked with the investigation into the homicide of a 15-year-old minor,” a statement from the prosecutor’s office that was shared with the media said.
The Independent went on to report that prosecutors believe the woman gave birth to the child in the hotel and attempted to rid herself of it.
The police juvenile protection unit is working on investigating the homicide of the child.
The statement went on to share that the 18-year-old was taken to the hospital to undergo surgery related to the birth. She was placed in custody there.
Sources also shared with the outlet that investigators are looking into whether or not she was in denial about her pregnancy.
The woman was reportedly part of a group of young adults traveling in Europe.
